OverC Clips - installing on Windows

  1. Right-click this folder's "Install OverC Clips" and choose Open,
     or just double-click it.

  2. Windows will probably show a blue box saying "Windows protected
your PC". That appears for anything downloaded from the internet
that has not been through paid code-signing. It is not a sign that
something is wrong with the file.

To continue: click "More info", then "Run anyway".

  3. A black window opens and shows the installer working. If Python is
not installed it will tell you how to get it - the Microsoft Store
version needs no administrator rights - and you run this again.

  4. When it finishes, start it from the "OverC Clips" icon on your
Desktop. It puts an icon in the notification area, by the clock,
and opens the page in your browser. Use that icon to open the page
again, or to stop it. Nothing needs to be left open.

  5. The first time you start it, Windows may ask whether to allow it
through the firewall. Say yes if you want to use it from your
phone over wifi. If you say no, it still works on this computer.

Watch your antivirus

OverC Clips is not code-signed, and some antivirus software blocks
unsigned programs without saying so plainly. Norton has been seen
blocking pythonw.exe, which is the part that runs OverC Clips.

When that happens the symptoms are confusing rather than obvious:
the page opens but nothing works, clips stop part way, updates do
nothing, or the program keeps disappearing on its own.

So: watch for a notification from your antivirus while this installs
and the first time you start the program, and allow it when asked.
That one click is usually the whole fix.

If you missed the prompt, add this folder to your antivirus's allowed
or excluded list and install again:

      %LOCALAPPDATA%\overc-clips

If it stops working, or will not update

Run "Uninstall OverC Clips" in this folder, then install again. It
removes the program, the Python it runs in and the shortcuts.

Your clips are not touched. They live in Videos\overc-clips with your
collections, your saved lists and everything known about each clip,
and installing again picks them all up exactly as they were.

It installs only into your own account and never asks for an
administrator password, and "Uninstall OverC Clips" in this folder
takes it all off again.
